President

Tyree is the senior director and co-founder of the Virginia Center for Investigative Journalism at WHRO.

Susan Smigielski Acker
Vice President

Smigielski Acker is a freelance journalist and editor with more than 25 years of experience, including with The Virginian-Pilot.

Jeff South
Secretary

South, a former newspaper editor and reporter who taught journalism at VCU, was president of SPJVA from 2019 to 2021.

Deana Meredith
Treasurer

Meredith is communications manager for the Virginia Press Association and an award-winning writer and photographer.

Nicole Livas
Director 2

Livas, a former TV anchor, is the chief communications and community engagement officer for Virginia Beach City Public Schools.

Chuck Jackson
Director 3

Jackson is editor of The MadRapp Recorder and The Greene Journal. He has worked for the Culpeper Star-Exponent and other publications.

Dina Weinstein
Director 4

Weinstein, SPJVA president from 2021 to 2023, is a Virginia Humanities fellow and an independent journalist who writes for VCU and the Henrico Citizen.

Alix Bryan-Campos
Director 5

Bryan-Campos is an assistant professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she directs VCU Capital News Service.

Reynolds Hutchins
Director 6

Hutchins, editor of The Daily Progress in Charlottesville, also is on the board of the Virginia Coalition for Open Government.

Mason Adams
Director 7

Adams is a freelancer covering the Blue Ridge Mountains and co-host of Inside Appalachia on West Virginia Public Broadcasting.

Shawn Day
Director 8

Day is the senior director of public affairs for the consulting firm Capital Results. He has been a journalist for The Virginian-Pilot and other newspapers.

Brett Hall
Director 9

Hall is a municipal government reporter for WAVY-TV in Hampton Roads. He has been a journalist in New York and a reporter for CBS Radio.

Robin Reed
Student chapter representative

Reed is an anchor at WDBJ and a professor of professional practice at Virginia Tech. He is the student-chapter representative on the SPJVA board. 

Mechelle Hankerson
Immediate past president

Hankerson is the news director at WHRO Public Media in Norfolk. She previously was a reporter for The Virginian-Pilot and The Virginia Mercury.
