A graduate of Washington & Lee University, Allen worked for The Free Lance-Star in Fredericksburg, the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the New York Times, The Washington Post and Time magazine. He covered both the White House and Capitol Hill (at different times) for The Post. At The Politico, his popular blog, “Mike Allen’s Playbook,” reads like he talks and, one colleague notes, usually arrives at a “disturbingly early hour.”

DIRECTIONS FOR LOCALS: Enter the parking deck on the left side of 3rd Street (one way heading south) in the block between Grace Street and Franklin Street. That’s a left on 3rd off Grace, which is one-way east. Heading toward the Capitol on Franklin, you turn left on 4th, left on Grace and left on 3rd — parking deck on your left.
FROM THE EAST ON I-64: Take the 5th Street/Downtown exit from I-64. Pass the Convention Center on the right and the Marriott on the left and cross Broad Street. At the next light after Broad, turn right on Grace. Go the second light and turn left on 3rd — parking deck on your left.
FROM THE NORTH ON I-95: Take the Downtown/3rd Street exit. Stay on 3rd. You will pass the Convention Center and cross Broad. The parking deck is on your left a block and a half past Broad Street.
VIA THE DOWNTOWN EXPRESSWAY (from the south and I-95): Get off on the Downtown Expressway. Take the 9th Street exit and follow 9th to Grace Street. Turn left on Grace and proceed about six blocks to 3rd Street. Turn left on 3rd — parking deck on your left.
VIA THE DOWNTOWN EXPRESSWAY (from the west, I-64 and the Powhite Parkway): Take the 2nd Street exit just past the Meadow Street toll plaza (the only tool plaza downtown). At the light, turn left on 2nd. Note that it shortly becomes one-way. Turn right at the Library onto Franklin Street. Go two blocks to 4th Street and turn left. Then turn left at the next light, which is Grace. The first light is 3rd — turn left and the deck is on your left.
