Deadline extended: Students, apply for summer 2016 newsroom fellowships

Fellowships offer intern opportunities for students seeking journalism careers. The application deadline has been extended until April 15.

Society of Professional Journalists, Virginia Pro Chapter
Virginia SPJ, SDX Educational Foundation

The Virginia SPJ Chapter will award two $1,500 fellowships that will require — and help pay for — a supervised summer newsroom internship for any rising junior or senior at an accredited Virginia College. The 2016 internships require at least six weeks’ full-time work at bona fide news organization.

The responsibility of securing a summer internship will rest entirely with the student.  Payment of the fellowship stipend to the student will be made in advance upon confirmation by the host news organization and approval of the internship proposal by the SPJ/SDX Educational Foundation Trustees. The stipend will be paid in addition to any internship salary offered by the host news organization and can be used to help with living expenses during the summer internship.

Applicants are not required to be journalism majors, but they must demonstrate intent to pursue a career in journalism (print, broadcast and/or online media). Both fellowship winners will be recognized at the annual George Mason Banquet, held annually to honor a person who has supported freedom of the press and contributed significantly to Virginia journalism.

Applications are now being accepted for the two fellowships. You may apply using this online form (with some documents provided by email). The deadline to apply online has been extended until April 15.  Or you may print out the application form and mail your application materials to:

Clissa England
SPJ Fellowship Chair
5803 Fox Hollow Dr.
North Chesterfield, VA 23237-3103

Mailed applications must be postmarked on or before April 15, 2016.  Fellowships will be awarded shortly thereafter.

Internships must meet the following requirements:

  • The experience must relate to the student’s area of study, focused on the area of journalism the student plans to pursue. Interns should experience writing for publication for the chosen media.
  • The minimum six-week internship must be offered by a bona fide news organization engaged in journalism and/or multi-media.
  • Internship must be approved SPJ/SDX Educational Foundation Trustees before Fellowship is awarded.

Information about the fellowships will be mailed to every college in Virginia, to the attention of the student newspaper and any journalism/mass communications department.
