Jeff South elected chapter president; seeking nominations for open positions

The Society of Professional Journalists, Virginia Pro Chapter board unanimously elected Jeff South, a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, to serve as the 2019-20 chapter president.

Jeff has been active in SPJ national leadership, is the advisor of the VCU SPJ campus chapter, involved in SPJ Virginia Pro, as well as our Virginia SPJ,SDX educational foundation activities for many years.

After more than 20 years as a newspaper editor and reporter, Jeff joined the Richard T. Robertson School of Media and Culture’s faculty in August 1997. He directs the school’s Capital News Service program, in which undergraduate journalism students cover the General Assembly and other aspects of state government for news media throughout Virginia and beyond. At the graduate level, Jeff teaches computer-assisted reporting (how journalists can use computers to gather and analyze information).

We are thrilled to have Jeff’s leadership and guidance during this time of transition and revival for the chapter. We also want to thank Wilford Kale, who was serving as president pro-tem, until we could find a permanent president.

In the coming weeks we will transition everyone into their new positions and set a date for the next board meeting. Feedback including what programs and speakers you are interested in is appreciated.

The 2019-2020 officers and board of directors are listed below. **We are still looking for four more people to serve on the chapter board: a vice president and three directors. Officers serve one-year terms. Directors serve staggered one-, two- and three-year terms. If you would like to join the board, or would like to nominate someone, please reach us at virginiaprospj@gmail.com.
