Student fellowship funding and new SPJVA board member

At its January meeting, the Board of Directors of the SPJ Virginia Pro Chapter unanimously approved allocating $1,500 to the SPJ,SDX Educational Foundation in support of the foundation’s fellowships for college journalists doing summer internships.

The foundation, the chapter’s nonprofit arm, provides financial assistance to support college students’ summer internships at print, broadcast and online news organizations. Students have until April 1 to apply for stipends of up to $1,500 for the coming summer’s internships. Here are more details about the fellowship program.

Since 1971, about 100 college journalists have received the foundation’s financial help in launching their careers.

Also at its Jan. 8 meeting, the board unanimously approved the appointment of Reynolds Hutchins, editor of The Daily Progress in Charlottesville, to finish out the term of SPJVA director Hawes Spencer. 

As head of the Daily Progress newsroom, Hutchins also oversees production of the Orange County Review, Greene County Record, Rural Virginian serving Central Virginia and the News Virginian in Waynesboro. 

A graduate of Wake Forest University, Hutchins has won multiple Virginia Press Association awards and is on the board of the Virginia Coalition for Open Government.
